Building a Garden One Raised Bed at a Time

I grew up on a farm where gardens weren’t a hobby — they were part of everyday life. That early connection to growing things never left me, even after moving into the city. During the pandemic, I decided to bring a bit of that farm life back into my yard and built my first three raised beds from salvaged 2×6 lumber. It was simple, imperfect, and exactly what I needed.

Since then, I’ve expanded my little backyard patch into a full raised‑bed garden, with a mix of more salvaged‑wood beds I’ve built myself and several sturdy store‑bought metal beds. I also keep at least a couple dozen container gardens scattered around my yard because I love experimenting with different setups and growing styles.

Elevated Patch grew out of that journey — a place to share real, Alberta‑tested experience with anyone who wants to garden confidently in Zone 3. My goal is to make raised‑bed gardening feel approachable, practical, and doable for beginners, using methods that actually work in our climate.
